Side trips to historic towns and sites abound along Scenic Highway 14. Some lie within just a few minutes - others within a couple of hours. For additional information contact each town's Chamber of Commerce.

 

A few of the more popular destination points include:

• Rush Historic District, Buffalo National River
The town of Rush was once a thriving mining community that sprang up along hillsides and within hollows in the 1880s. It reached its heyday during WW1. Today, hiking trails and historic markers provide access to portions of the abandoned community.

• Buffalo River State Park Historic District, BNR
Ozark Mountains Historic TownsBefore the Buffalo National River there was
Buffalo River State Park, developed in the 1930's
by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC). The
CCC built the roadway, retaining walls, pavilion
#1, rustic cabins, and lodge next to the cabins.
Today these cabins are considered the most
historically intact within the state. These cabins
may be rented through the park concessionaire
or there are other cabins and accomidations
available in the surrounding area.

• Town of Yellville
Visit Yellville’s town square and sit beneath the shade of trees surrounding MarionGet Down In Yellville For A Street Party! County's courthouse. Drive the backstreets to view houses that stood during Civil War days, and if there's time, drop a line into the nationally known Crooked Creek, famous for bass fishing. Turkey Trot festival, is held the 2nd weekend in October and features, arts & crafts, pageants, contests and a 5K race.

 

Visit The Ozark Folk Center

• Mountain View and the Ozark Folk Center
An Arkansas State Park, the Ozark Folk Center preserves and interprets mountain music, crafts, and traditions. The center hosts shows nightly and weekends. Visit the town square for some folk music jammin’ and nearby Blanchard Springs CavernsExplore The Boone County Heritage Museum . . ..

 

City of Harrison
Tour town square, a National Register Historic District and part of Arkansas's Main Street program. Visit the Lyric Theater, Boone County Heritage Museum and Genealogy Library (Photo To Left) , and the Marine Corps Legacy Museum with Yell & Shout At Eureka Springs Arkansas!artifacts dating back to the Revolutionary War.

 

• Eureka Springs
Historic buildings, the internationally famous Passion Play, art galleries, and dozens of excellent eateries combine to make Eureka a GREAT Day Trip

Rush Historic District

The Old Store in the Rush Historic DistrictLocated at the end of Hwy. 26 off Scenic Highway 14, this now deserted town was once a thriving mining community. Silver and zinc were first discovered here in 1882, and in 1883 a record 13,000 pound piece of zinc was excavated and shipped to the Chicago World's Fair for exhibition. Today that piece is still housed in Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. 

The National Park Service now cares for the remaining structures and maintains hiking trails, a boating access area to the Buffalo National River and a camping area. 

Historic markers are placed at significant sites to help visitors relive the past in this scenic, historic town.
